Highest reported car crash compensation payout in British history

25 March 2010

A passenger paralysed in a car crash has been awarded a record breaking £11.15 million payout.

The award to Wasim Mohammed is the highest reported personal injury compensation payout in British history.

Mr Mohammed was five days off his 19th birthday when he was severely injured in a car that was being driven by someone who was then a friend. The 22 year old was in the front seat of the car when it clipped a vehicle at a junction and ploughed into a wall.

He broke his neck, damaged his spinal cord and is now a tetraplegic, with very little function in his arms and no function at all in his legs.

Daniel Herman, catastrophic injury specialist at Stewarts Law, who represented the 22-year-old, said the £11.15m package would be paid in a lump sum of £4.25 million and annual payments of £235,000.

Mr Mohammed needs two careers to help him with everyday activities like getting out of bed and washing.

Mr Herman said: "I am pleased that Wasim has secured such a good settlement.

"Whilst the money cannot replace what he has lost, it will mean that he can live as comfortably as possible, close to his family and safe in the knowledge that he will always be cared for."

Mr Mohammed has just bought a house opposite his parents so he can remain independent but close to his family.

Mr Mohammed said: "I am pleased the case is over and am very grateful to all those who have helped me since my injury.

"It is very important to me to be able to fulfil my duty to my family the best I can.

"Being able to live near them and see them every day while still getting the care I need is as close as I can get."
