Laura Jenkins spoke on a panel titled ‘Litigation and Regulation: The Last Decade and Beyond’, at the Knect 365 Financial Institutions Conference held in September 2019.

The conference was held at the Millennium Hotel in Knightsbridge and chaired by Christian Toms of Brown Rudnick. There were a number of interesting panel sessions including an insightful one from Sara George at Sidley Austin on the Danske Bank investigations, a case on which she acted.

The Litigation and Regulation panel focused on the impact of the maturing litigation funding market and group actions, particularly in the securities litigation context. Laura was speaking alongside Steven Friel, CEO of Woodsford Litigation Funding, and Rebecca Nelson, Director, Associate General Counsel at Citigroup. The agenda for the session was:

  • GDPR v. MIFID II
  • How to address the unique challenges posed by cryptocurrencies
  • Examples and recent trends in group litigation against the banks
    • Collective redress in leave/stay scenarios
  • The state of play for litigation funding and the removal of the Arkin cap

The session was interactive, with many interesting and insightful comments and questions being shared both by the panel and the conference audience, which included in-house counsel at a number of major banking institutions, expert witnesses and senior litigators.

Laura commented:

“I was delighted to be invited to speak at this interesting and well attended conference. It was a great opportunity to discuss the challenges faced by those working in or with the financial institutions that we often find ourselves acting against. We were also able to provide them with some insight into the challenges that we as lawyers face, but also the way that we see securities, and other, litigation developing in this jurisdiction.”
