NHS England’s new Standard Contract published on 3 January 2018 has formally endorsed the pro bono work carried out by The Legal Service.

Stewarts pioneered the concept of a pro bono legal service in 2004 when we started providing a free legal service for those who had suffered serious injury or illness in a specialist rehabilitation hospital. The benefits of a free legal service were soon recognised by other NHS Trusts and we now provide pro bono legal services in 11 NHS Trusts throughout the country.

The Technical Guidance document that supports the Standard Contract states:

“We were anxious to ensure that the Contract requirement did not adversely affect the valuable legal services provided to patients and their families in major trauma centres.”

We hope that this endorsement from NHS England will enable more patients and families to receive free support from The Legal Service in their time of need.

The Legal Service is provided by Stewarts’ pro bono team as part of the firm’s commitment to help people with serious injury. The service offers free advice to patients when they need it most.
