Many of Ryan’s cases are conducted in the High Court but he has also acted for clients in matters in the Court of Appeal, as well as in relation to complaints to the Independent Press Standards Organisation, the Information Commissioner’s Office, the Advertising Standards Authority, and the Office of Communications. Ryan also has extensive experience of dealing with matters via alternative dispute resolution.
Examples of cases Ryan has acted upon are: a large number of defamation matters for both claimant and defendant clients; malicious falsehood disputes; complex privacy and data protection matters; privacy injunction applications; phone, email and social media hacking cases; ‘revenge porn’ issues; breaches of confidence disputes; copyright, trade marks and passing off; blacklisting; group litigation actions; breaches of media and technology contracts; negligent misstatements; freedom of information; and corporate branding issues. He represents organisations and individuals.
Ryan joined Stewarts in January 2019. He was previously Group Legal Advisor for DMG Media, the brand name of Associated Newspapers Limited, which publishes The Daily Mail, The Mail on Sunday, MailOnline, Metro, and metro.co.uk. At DMG he advised on pre-publication litigation risk and acted on post-publication litigation matters relating to disputes across the world. Before he worked for DMG Media he was a Partner and Head of Media Law at another London-based law firm.

Ryan has published a large number of articles in the Media, from the legal trade press to the national newspapers, and has appeared with clients on platforms such as LBC Radio. Ryan has also delivered regular lectures on the law to large organisations and clients.
In his spare time Ryan enjoys cycling, trekking, and writing fiction.
