India Business Law Journal (IBLJ) has recognised Stewarts, the UK’s largest disputes only firm, as a significant player for India-related work in the latest edition of its guide to the market’s top players.

Our Head of India Practice and Head of International Arbitration Sherina Petit continues to be recognised in the A-List of India’s International Top Lawyers. She has been featured in the A-List since its inception in 2016.

Within nine months of the foundation of Stewarts’ dedicated India Practice, our team has achieved a listing as one of the leading foreign law firms involved in India-related work in the same standing as much larger, full-service and more long-established offerings.

In its analysis of more than 600 law firms across the world, IBLJ has included Stewarts in its list based exclusively on our disputes acumen of handling high value complex disputes unlike most other firms listed, which primarily focus on transactional work.

Drawing on one key case example, IBLJ notes that Stewarts is acting for InterGlobe Aviation on its claim for US$28 million in damages for fraudulent misrepresentation and unlawful means conspiracy. Sherina Petit and senior associate Nishant Singh are highlighted for their roles within our litigation and arbitration practices.

Last year, Sherina joined Stewarts as Head of International Arbitration and set-up the India Practice at Stewarts. Sherina has been consistently recognised in IBLJ A-List, since its inception in 2016, as one of the leading India-focused international lawyers for dispute resolution. This is the first time Stewarts has been recognised as a significant player for India-related disputes, achieving it in less than a year of setting up a practice focused on India.

Testimonials

Sujeet Anand, senior vice president at DBS Bank, consulted our team on an enforcement action relating to the UK as jurisdiction. “Stewarts was very responsive and worked on a very tight timeline given the sensitivity of the matter,” he told IBLJ. “The team was flexible, taking into consideration the commercial aspect while formulating a litigation strategy and its execution.” Sujeet highlighted that Sherina and Nishant have shown “a fine balance of legal acumen coupled with commercial insight.”

Payal Chawla, founder of Delhi-based all-women firm JusContractus, recommended Sherina as her “legal ally in the UK” as part of research for the latest edition. “Sherina and I collaborated on a cross-border arbitration matter, and I was profoundly impressed by her vast knowledge and unwavering attention to detail,” says Chawla. “Her expertise and unwavering commitment were indispensable to the outcome.”

“Subsequently, we have had the privilege of co-presenting at arbitration conferences, experiences that I have found immensely enriching and enjoyable. Furthermore, Sherina is a prolific writer, contributing regularly to legal discourse, which further underscores her dedication and proficiency in the field.”

The India Promise

The A-List also highlighted Sherina’s role in advocating for the India Promise, an initiative to address the under-representation of Indian arbitrators appointed to international arbitration tribunals across the world. The goal of the India Promise is to encourage the consideration, appointment and fair representation for Indians to sit as arbitrators in any international arbitration, regardless of it having an Indian connection.
