Shaun Whiter was helping his friend change a tyre when a driver struck their vehicle in July 2016. The driver pleaded guilty to serious injury by dangerous driving and was sentenced to 40 months imprisonment and a five-year driving ban.

Shaun was taken to Addenbrooke’s Hospital for treatment and suffered a double leg amputation as a result of the accident.

Prior to his accident Shaun enjoyed a full life socialising with friends and family. He played semi-professional football for Newmarket Town Football Club. His other sporting hobbies were skiing, golf, running, swimming and competing in triathlons.

Shaun said:

“My rehabilitation started with physiotherapy sessions in Addenbrooke’s and getting to know my body again as I had been bed bound for one month. This involved all types of physiotherapy, yoga, pilates and muscle work along with cardiovascular work. I found the rowing machine the best for this.

“Through my solicitors at Stewarts I was introduced to PACE Rehabilitation. This is where my rehabilitation was ramped up not only personally but also by the team around me as I kept going with the Pilates to help with my core stability. I kept the cardiovascular up with swimming and regular outings out on the wheelchair as that got my heart rate up.

“Eight months down the line and I have achieved so much according to everyone around me. I am back walking again using Genium x3s, which have been funded by interim payments received from the defendant’s insurer. The prosthesis has enabled me to gain a massive part of my life back. With the help of PACE and the charity Limbpower I have been introduced to sit skiing on the indoor ski slope at Milton Keynes. I have also been involved in a Le Mans type go karting event helping to get petrol heads back into the racing world; I had a go kart that was hand control adapted to allow me to compete.

“With the help of PACE I have been introduced to new sports and have recently purchased a hand bike and have entered into a charity 150-mile cycle over two days and am very much looking forward to this. With a group of friends and family I am taking on a swimming challenge in July.”
