Our Tax Litigation and Resolution team has won in the Best Tax Disputes and Investigations Team category at this year’s Tolley’s Taxation Awards, hosted at the Hilton London Metropole.

The awards recognise professional services firms, specialist tax firms and in-house and public sector professionals, celebrating outstanding achievements and contributions to the tax industry as whole.

Head of Tax Litigation and Resolution David Pickstone commented: “We are very proud to have received the award for Best Tax Disputes and Investigations Team 2024. This is a fantastic recognition of the team’s achievements and hard work. A big thank you to our amazing clients and referees and of course to all of the brilliant members of the team.”

Our Tax Litigation and Resolution team

We advise a wide range of national and multinational corporates as well as high-net-worth individuals, owner-managed businesses, and trusts. Although boasting expertise across the full range of direct and indirect taxes, the team specialises in high-value tax disputes and litigation where our depth of many years of experience and expertise enables us to add the most value. Clients tell us that “Stewarts’ tax litigation team is top class, with leading practitioners who really know their stuff and take an innovative and entrepreneurial approach to maximising their clients’ claims.”

The Stewarts team has been at the forefront of some of the most important cases in this area, including the high-profile Ingenious and Eclipse group actions and the Quinn litigation on R&D tax relief. “The team has gone from strength to strength”, says David Pickstone, the team’s founding partner and head. “We enjoy a great reputation in the market across all taxes. In terms of fee-earners alone, it is now one of the largest disputes-only tax practices in the UK. We are extremely proud of what we have achieved.”

The Stewarts offering is unique in its ability to deal with the full spectrum of taxes including innovative ways of resolving disputes and tax investigations, against HMRC, while also having the commercial litigation expertise to pursue alternative recourse where appropriate. This “kind of one-stop shop” has big advantages for clients, observes partner Alex Lerner. “I think the seamless integration between our team’s two specialisms makes our offering unique in the market and also helps us drive positive outcomes for our clients.”

Our team is also active within the wider tax community including the London Tax Society, Women in Tax, Contentious Tax Group, and Revenue Bar Association, as well as specialist bodies such as the VAT Practitioners’ Group. The team regularly writes for key industry publications such as Taxation and Tax Journal, and publishes a monthly e-newsletter on developments in the tax litigation field.
