Matt’s practice spans high value commercial litigation, frequently involving cross border issues, multi party disputes and parallel proceedings in multiple jurisdictions. He has deep experience in injunctive relief (including freezing injunctions and Norwich Pharmacal orders), minority shareholder protection, breach of contract, fiduciary duty and trust claims. His recent work has focused on civil fraud, acting for both claimants and defendants at trial, including in some of the most complex and high value fraud claims before the English High Court. Matt also has a particular interest in ESG related disputes and regularly contributes commentary in this developing area.
Experience
- Acting for defendants in a $40m claim in fraud and breach of contract concerning the supply of ventilators to the Mexican government during the COVID 19 pandemic
- Acting for a public pension fund in major civil fraud proceedings against the Man Group concerning alleged bribery and corruption — one of the largest and most complex fraud cases to be heard in the High Court
- Obtaining and responding to multiple orders to obtain evidence in support of letters of request/rogatory issued by various US courts in multiple high-profile proceedings, including obtaining the first such orders in the ADGM in Abu Dhabi
- Acting pro bono for interveners in the Court of Appeal in Churchill v Merthyr Tydfil [2023] EWCA Civ 1416, establishing new law enabling courts to compel ADR
- Acting for an insolvency administrator in multi jurisdictional proceedings involving the restructuring of over €1.2bn in debt [2023] EWHC 1931
- Acting in a group shareholder action against Tesco under s.90A FSMA.
Career
Matt joined Stewarts in 2014, completed his training contract, then practised in Jersey for two years at a boutique litigation firm before returning to Stewarts as an associate in February 2020.
Publications and Media
Matt regularly writes and comments on complex commercial and ESG-related disputes. His recent publications include co‑authoring an article in Sustainable Views on the litigation risks posed by PFAS/‘forever chemicals’ and wider ESG regulation. He has also analysed litigation risks in the carbon credits and derivatives markets, US dispute highlights litigation risks inherent in carbon credits and related derivatives market, and written on the implications of ClientEarth’s climate change litigation against Shell for activist claims in the UK.
Personal
Outside of work, Matt enjoys an active family life with his young children. He follows many sports, particularly football and cricket, and spends much of his free time walking outdoors. He also looks forward to travelling more with his family as his children grow older.
