In just 18 months, Stewarts has built an India-focused disputes powerhouse – and the recognition is rolling in. The 2025 edition of India Business Law Journal (IBLJ) ranks Stewarts in the list of top performers among the foreign firms in relation to India, highlighting our growing strength in complex, high-value disputes involving Indian parties.

Stewarts first appeared in IBLJ’s list of top foreign firms in 2024 – just nine months after launching its India practice. Since then, the team has more than tripled in size, expanded its caseload, and continued to deliver exceptional results. Given the confidential nature of the work, it is not possible to provide details of clients and cases but InterGlobe’s external counsel, Gaurav Adusumalli endorses the firm and the team as “a top law firm providing excellent counsel in some very complex litigation matters.” He further describes Sherina Petit, Head of International Arbitration and the India Practice as “simply excellent… precise, to-the-point and clear in complicated legal matters.”

This follows the inclusion of Sherina Petit in IBLJ’s International A-List of Top Lawyers – an accolade she has received every year since the list’s inception in 2016. Testimonials provided to IBLJ about Sherina “highlight her extensive experience in international arbitration, specialising in India-related disputes”. The latest A-List commentary notes that “UK-based litigators have consistently maintained their reputation in India-related cases – from fraud investigations to enforcement” and selects Sherina as an “excellent example”.

IBLJ’s list focuses on “seasoned counsel” who can “deftly navigate English courts and international arbitral forums for Indian corporates”. With regards to the India Practice and Sherina, Mr Jayendra Kapadia, Partner at Little & Co. has stated: “Throughout her career, Ms Petit has represented clients in arbitrations across all major arbitral institutions and courts, handling complex cases with skill and precision. Her deep understanding of both international and Indian legal frameworks sets her apart, having practised as an advocate in India [Mumbai], where she represented clients in both domestic and international arbitration.”

Sherina Petit comments: “This recognition reflects how far we have come in a very short period of time. We have assembled a stellar team of associates from leading UK and Indian firms – including Nishant Nath Singh, Vatsala Kumar, Muizz Drabu, Taronish Mistry and Ethan Chauhan – all of whom bring hands on, practical, deep expertise in India-related disputes.

We have also launched an internship and overseas lawyer programme to create meaningful opportunities for foreign-qualified, high-potential individuals – including rising stars from India – who are looking to build a career in international arbitration. Advika Gemawat is one such star that is currently part of the programme. We are investing in people, growing our practice and focusing on delivering exceptionally tailored outcomes for Indian clients in global disputes. India related disputes aren’t just another case file – they demand tactical excellence and cultural intelligence. At Stewarts, we bring both to the table, every time!”

With consecutive IBLJ accolades and a rapidly growing bench, Stewarts has cemented its place as a go-to firm for India-related disputes – with talent, tenacity and results to match.
