Leading disputes firm Stewarts announces further expansion and has appointed Iain Dodd and Guy Pomphrey as partners in its Medical Negligence practice, reinforcing the firm’s strength and depth in complex, high-value medical negligence claims. Both join from Fletchers.

Iain brings a wealth of experience in brain and spinal cord injury claims. He is highly ranked in Legal 500 and Chambers, accredited by The Law Society and APIL, and has significant leadership experience having led the brain injury team at Fletchers for many years. Iain has authored a textbook, A practical guide to stroke claims in clinical negligence, is a past nominee of Clinical Negligence lawyer of the year at the Personal Injury Awards and holds Higher Rights of Audience. Iain will lead the Medical Negligence team in the Stewarts’ Leeds office. The legal directories describe Iain as “…terrific — the complete article of a clinical negligence solicitor”.

Speaking about his appointment, Iain said:

“Guiding clients through high-value, complex medical negligence litigation claims require specialist teams who can navigate the complexity that arises in these cases with confidence and empathy. Stewarts brings together exceptional talent and the department is entering an exciting phase of expansion. I’m looking forward to helping accelerate that growth while supporting clients through the aftermath of a life‑changing injury.”

Guy specialises in maximum severity cases with an interest in child brain injury cases, particularly obstetric negligence cases. Reflecting this experience, Guy is a member of the prestigious specialist clinical negligence AvMA panel and The Law Society’s clinical negligence accreditation scheme. Legal directories describe Guy as “Tactically astute. A delight to work with”, “Kind, understanding, compassionate and commercial”.

Guy adds:

“Sadly there is a strong market for high-value medical negligence cases and Stewarts is well positioned to scale while continuing delivering the exceptional client care and results it’s known for – and I am excited to be part of that growth.”

Both lawyers will be based in Leeds but will be working closely with colleagues in London to support clients across the country who have sustained life-changing injuries as a result of negligent medical treatment.

Speaking about the significant hires, Anita Jewitt partner and head of the Medical Negligence department at Stewarts remarks:

“Our practice continues to grow at pace and I am delighted that Iain and Guy are joining Stewarts in this next phase of their career. Iain and Guy’s deep expertise in brain injury, spinal cord injury and birth injury cases, combined with their significant leadership experience, strengthens our Leeds presence and supports the next phase of our growth ambitions.”

The Medical Negligence practice focuses on the most complex claims, including cases involving brain injury, spinal cord injury, birth injury and cerebral palsy and amputation cases. The team sits alongside the firm’s market leading Personal Injury, Aviation and International Injury practices.

In September 2024, the firm appointed Anita Jewitt to lead the department, following her move from Irwin Mitchell.

Stewarts’ managing partner, Stuart Dench, concludes:

“These appointments reflect both the strength of our Medical Negligence practice and our commitment to maintaining the highest level of expertise in life-altering medical negligence work.”
