Lucy Gould speaks to Stylist about the personalities within divorce law, the impact working in the industry has had on her personal perspective, and what advice she would give those going through a divorce.

The article, which delves into the lives of four London divorce lawyers, investigates the truth behind some of the story lines in the BBC One show The Split. It states:

“So, is this life of law really as dramatic and glossy as we see on our TV screens? Stylist gathered together some of London’s most prestigious divorce lawyers – who do battle on behalf of their wealthy, high-profile clients on a daily basis – to talk litigation, their lives onscreen and what, in their opinion, really makes a relationship last.”

Although there are some high-profile personalities in divorce, senior associate Lucy thinks you can’t fake it and really it is about the client. She says:

“Some clients come to it and think they want someone to absolutely fight, and then you get into it and they think, ‘Actually, no, I can’t do this.’ The goal is to settle things as quickly and as amicably as possible. But sometimes there are issues – like difficult lawyers on the other side – and we just can’t.”

Lucy says that being in the industry has made her more realistic about relationships in general:

“…Because you see what makes relationships disintegrate so often, it just makes me more respectful of the other point of view.”

What would be Lucy’s advice to someone about to go through a divorce?

“…..it’s a cliché but time makes things better. Life does move on.”
