In our latest episode of Soundbites, Chris Smith speaks with Chris and Denise Arthey, who survived a life-changing motorcycle accident during a road trip in 2008.

Chris and Denise were on a work assignment in the USA, exploring South Texas, when a drunk driver veered into their lane at 80mph, colliding with them almost head-on. They both suffered multiple injuries, including the loss of their left legs above the knee. Chris was also in a coma for multiple days with internal injuries and a severe concussion.

After a long and painful recovery, they were fortunately both able to return to the vocations they love. They both enjoy physical fitness and Chris competes in endurance sports. He uses his prosthetic legs to run marathons and has competed in British Paratriathlon Championships, climbed Kilimanjaro and trekked to Everest Base Camp.

In the discussion, Chris and Denise share:

  • Their remarkable journey to recovery
  • The lessons they’ve learned along the way
  • How these lessons have shaped their outlook on life today
  • Their experience of overcoming adversity
  • The power of forgiveness
  • The critical importance of intervention, endurance sports and staying positive
