Stewarts has opened a dedicated gallery showcasing the work of Suleman Aqeel Khilji (b. 1985, Quetta, Pakistan).

A graduate of the National College of Arts, Lahore, and the Royal Academy of Arts, Suleman is the recipient of the 2025 Stewarts Prize. His work explores memory, identity and the poetics of representation through painting.

Suleman has exhibited internationally since 2010, with notable appearances at Art Basel, Art Basel Paris with STANDARD (Oslo) and the Drawing Biennale 2023. His work has also featured in numerous exhibitions across Europe and South Asia and is held in prestigious collections including the Astrup Fearnley Museum, Kistefos Museum Norway and The Arts Council Collection, UK.

His artistic journey has been shaped by residencies, such as the Munch’s Studio Foundation Residency (2025). Alongside the Stewarts Prize, he is also a recipient of the Edna Rose Weiss Award from the Royal Academy of Arts.

Suleman comments:

“As an artist, I reside in painting. It is a kind of home. Yet, on the way home, one often takes detours. Objects like old book covers, cigarette packs, and fragments of wood become those detours, small pauses that guide me back to painting. I think of them as thoughts, extending themselves onto other surfaces beyond the canvas.

“For the show at Stewarts, I will be presenting some of these objects I have come to see as paintings.”
