John is frequently described as the ‘architect’ of the Stewarts business model. His experience (over 30 years) of dealing with a wide range of complex civil disputes has informed the firm’s choice of specialist litigation areas and supported the promotion and growth of the firm.

Although not now an active fee earner, John is Chairman of the Risk and Funding Committee. This committee decides whether or not to accept instructions on a case if it is to be funded on a contingent or conditional fee basis. Correct litigation risk assessment at the outset has been and will continue to be a key component of the firm’s success. John is also keen to ensure that individual practice areas are supported by a system of clear and effective management.

Recognition

The firm has received many awards over the years that recognise its litigation specialism as well as its competency in management. In 2018, Stewarts was again recognised by The Sunday Times as one of the 100 Best Companies To Work For in the UK.

Experience

In the past 10 years, John has spearheaded the launch of the firm’s Divorce and Family, Aviation and Travel, International Injury, Commercial Litigation, Employment, Competition Litigation, International Arbitration, Tax Litigation, Trust and Probate Litigation, and Financial Crime departments.

Career

John qualified as a solicitor in 1985 after being articled at Kingsford Dorman in Lincoln’s Inn. He joined Herbert Oppenheimer post qualification  and was one of the founding partners of Stewarts in 1990.

Accreditations and Memberships

John is a member of the City of London Law Society, a founder of the Forum of Complex Injury Lawyers (FOCIS), and formerly an accredited mediator.

Personal

John was educated at the Oratory School, Woodcote and Bristol Polytechnic. His leisure interests include fly fishing, gardening, golf, tennis and swimming. John is a member of the Hurlingham Club and a keen follower of Modern British Art. He resides in London.
