Episode 1 – My Medical Reality – A journey of IVF, Childbirth and Motherhood after Spinal Cord Injury

In this episode, Nicola Cundall shares her powerful and deeply personal story of navigating fertility, childbirth and motherhood after sustaining a spinal cord injury at just 18 years old following a road traffic collision. She takes us through the early days of uncertainty, from the questions and fears she faced in acute care and the spinal unit, to the challenges of beginning her reproductive journey.

Nicola opens up about her experience with IVF, pregnancy and giving birth while managing both a spinal cord injury and complex abdominal trauma. Her story highlights the realities of living with multi‑layered health needs and how these were approached at every stage. She also offers practical insights for people affected by spinal cord injury and for the clinical teams who support them, drawing on the depth and honesty of her lived experience.
