Stewarts is Band 1 ranked as Litigation Finance Deal Counsel in the newly created category, introduced into Chambers Litigation Support 2025. This year’s guide also ranks our Costs and Funding Disputes and Asset Recovery teams.

Partners Julian Chamberlayne and Alex Jay receive individual rankings as Litigation Finance Deal Counsel; Alex is also ranked for global-wide asset tracing and recovery.

Our teams are widely recognised in Chambers’ other guides. The 2025 Chambers UK guide recognises Stewarts in 20 disputes categories, and lists 72 of our lawyers. Chambers Global ranks five of our departments and 12 individuals.

Litigation funding advice

One of only three firms to debut in Band 1 of the Litigation Finance Deal Counsel category, Stewarts is described by Chambers as having “longstanding experience advising clients on legal costs, litigation funding, and expenses insurance.” The guide says: “The team excels in securing the best funding terms for high-value disputes, working with a wide panel of funders to create tailored solutions for clients.”

Testimonials from sources interviewed by the guide agree that “Stewarts is at the cutting edge and can find solutions even where funding may be an issue… Its strengths are its meticulous approach to the legal analysis, discovery process and excellent management of the litigation process. We’ve been impressed by its strategy and team from the start.”

Julian Chamberlayne and Alex Jay both receive individual rankings. Chambers notes that Alex “works with litigation funders to secure innovative funding structures for insolvency and asset recovery, with a strong focus on cross-border matters,” while Julian “heads Stewarts’ cost and funding disputes team, focusing on costs, insurance and funding for complex litigation. He oversees alternative funding arrangements and regularly contributes to the industry through speaking engagements and written work.”

Costs lawyers

Stewarts’ Costs team have for decades provided a flagship ancillary service to our existing clients. Since late 2023 we have extended our Costs and Funding Disputes service on a stand-alone basis to new clients with high-value, complex disputes relating to legal costs, litigation funding and legal expenses insurance.

Our Costs team’s expertise has now been recognised with a Chambers ranking. A Chambers source noted that the Stewarts Costs team “only handle complex, valuable and high profile matters….”. Others said: “Stewarts showed a safe pair of hands through the process… They are absolutely committed to what they take on.”

Asset recovery

Our team has been ranked by Chambers Litigation Support for the third consecutive year. “Stewarts’ ability to marshal evidence, anticipate judicial concerns and construct airtight arguments means that every case is presented in the strongest possible light,” testimonials in Chambers report. “The firm is comprised of commercially astute lawyers with excellent tactical skills and keeps the company’s needs in mind.”

We represent both officeholders and creditor/stakeholder clients in identifying, locating, securing and recovering assets worldwide. Through use of freezing injunctions, search orders and other interim measures, we specialise in leveraging the insolvency powers available to uncover evidence, gather documentation and deploy a comprehensive asset recovery strategy, particularly where defendants have attempted to conceal assets or information.
