Black History Month, celebrated each year from 1 to 31 October, is a month to cherish and commemorate the remarkable impact of Black Afro-Caribbean people on British history and current society.
Our Ethnicity, Religion and Culture focus group’s events celebrate our ethnic, religious and cultural diversity.
BHM quiz
‘Calypso’, ‘Trevor McDonald’ and ‘Bridgerton’ are just some of the answers to the five rounds of quizzing held across Stewarts’ London and Leeds offices on Wednesday 23 October, to mark this year’s Black History Month. This quiz was impressively won by two-member team ‘Dual Sense’, featuring Louis Peacock-Young and Aaron Wilson.
The Queen of Performing Arts, Sheba Montserrat, provided entertainment, history, comedy, and an African and Caribbean dance warm up experience for the attendees. Caribbean catering was provided by Michaels 5 Star Caterers in London, and Afro-fusion caterer Crave Kitchen in Leeds, with delicious dishes including jerk chicken, plantain, curry goat and beef suya on offer.
Book club
To continue the celebrations, on 30 October 2024 we hosted a book club in our London and Leeds offices to recognise this year’s Black History Month theme of ‘Reclaiming Narratives’. The selected book was Open Water by Caleb Azumah Nelson, recipient of multiple prestigious awards since its publication including winning the 2022 Betty Trask Award and Somerset Maugham Award.
The book club group participated in an enthusiastic discussion exploring the narrative style, themes and descriptions in this love story set in London, centred on two young Black British people.
