From hearing rooms to dining rooms
Recent work has taken members of Stewarts’ international arbitration practice to some of the world’s most influential arbitration centres. From hearings and conferences to roundtables and panel discussions, these journeys reflect the global nature of arbitration in practice. In this issue of International CARBitration we capture those experiences, linking where our people travel for work with the cultures and cuisines they encounter along the way.
Singapore: Hearings at the heart of Asia‑Pacific arbitration
Sherina Petit, Partner and Head of International Arbitration and the India practice lead, travelled to Singapore to attend a hearing, reinforcing the city’s position as a cornerstone of international arbitration in the Asia‑Pacific region.
Outside the hearing room, Singapore’s food scene offered a natural extension of professional engagement. Sherina’s recommendations reflect the city’s breadth and confidence as a global culinary hub:
Long Beach for their Jumbo iconic crab offerings, and Imperial Treasure Super Peking Duck for refined, classic dining. Each offers a setting where formal proceedings give way to conversation, and where the city’s international character is felt most.
Abuja: Arbitration and engagement in a regional context
Daniel Wilmot travelled to Abuja to speak at two sessions at the CIArb Nigeria Annual Conference, underlining nation’s growing role in regional and Africa‑related arbitration.
His recommendations speak to the city’s contrasting dining experiences. Bombay 2 Beirut combines Indian and Lebanese influences in a quiet, secure setting, with an outdoor terrace overlooking the city – ideal for thoughtful conversation after a day of conference sessions. At the other end of the spectrum, Blucabana offers a more unexpected experience: set within a waterpark, it boasts a menu longer than its waterslides and reflects Abuja’s eclectic and evolving dining scene.
Zurich: Precision, tradition and the European arbitration community
In Zurich, Alejandro Garcia delivered the keynote address at the ASA Below 40 Fall Seminar 2024, engaging with the next generation of arbitration practitioners in one of Europe’s most established arbitration centres.
His recommendation is unapologetically traditional. Restaurant Swiss Chuchi is celebrated for its fondue, it exemplifies Zurich’s understated but exacting approach to food. It’s a setting that mirrors the city itself: precise, unfussy, and deeply rooted in tradition.
Mumbai and New Delhi: India’s evolving arbitration landscape
India featured prominently in Issue One, reflecting its increasing importance within international arbitration.
Sherina travelled to Mumbai to attend the India Pledge Roundtable, while Senior Associate Nishant Nath Singh was in Mumbai and New Delhi for India ADR Week, where he moderated a panel discussion. Together, their recommendations span both cities and capture the depth and diversity of India’s culinary landscape.
In Delhi, stand‑out recommendations include Bukhara, Indian Accent, Kwality, Gulati, and Neuma, each offering a different expression of the city’s dining culture – from iconic North Indian cuisine to contemporary reinterpretations. In Mumbai, favourites include Trishna, Americano, and Britannia, reflecting the city’s blend of tradition, innovation, and cosmopolitan energy.
