Stewarts is pleased to announce that Charles Edwards will become Head of Personal Injury with effect from 1 May 2026 following Dan Herman’s decision to retire. Dan will continue as Head of Personal Injury for the next 14 months, working closely with Charles over that period to ensure a smooth transition.

Charles has been a partner at Stewarts for 19 years, having joined the firm in 2003. He is described by Legal 500, which lists him in its Hall of Fame, as “a leading individual who has a terrific manner with clients and opponents and really good judgement”. Charles specialises in the highest-value and most complex personal injury claims and has recovered more than £200 million for his clients during his time at Stewarts. He values transparency in litigation and collaboration between parties: he has been at the forefront of developing case-handling protocols with many of the major insurance companies which help us run cases running more smoothly, with less stress for our clients and to an earlier conclusion.

Dan, who will continue to assist the firm on various projects after his retirement, comments:

“The difficult decision to retire from Stewarts, my home for the last 25 years, has been made much easier by knowing that Charles will be taking the reins. I know he will be a huge success and, supported by all our other talented partners, will take the PI department at Stewarts to yet greater heights.”

Stuart Dench, Managing Partner, comments:

“Dan has done a fantastic job leading the PI department over the last few years and, whilst I’ll be sorry to see him step down in 2026, the department will be in very safe hands. Charles will be a great Head of PI and I’m delighted he will have the opportunity to build on the legacy created by Dan and Paul Paxton before him”.

Charles comments:

“Over my 22 years at Stewarts, I have always taken great satisfaction from making a difference to the lives of people who have sustained life-changing injuries.  Stewarts is unique in terms of our approach to client service and our longevity in the field of catastrophic injury. Being chosen as the next Head of Personal Injury is without a doubt the proudest moment of my career.  I will be following two very impressive predecessors, but am excited about being able to help shape the future of the department and the ways in which we can support our clients.”
