Our International Arbitration team had another strong year in the legal directories in 2021, securing individual listings across the board for its partners along with rankings for the team as a whole.

Global Arbitration Review’s sister publication, Who’s Who Legal, selected Partner and Head of International Arbitration, Philippa Charles, and fellow partner Daniel Wilmot for individual rankings within its 2022 Arbitration edition. Daniel achieved recognition as a ‘Future Leader’ in arbitration, and Philippa’s leading reputation was acknowledged through a dual-listing as ‘Thought Leader’ (2021) and ‘Global Leader’ (2022).

Who’s Who Legal awards listings to national and international leaders in their fields.

Stewarts’ International Arbitration team is staffed exclusively by dedicated and specialist practitioners in the field. Our team is conflict free and expert across numerous jurisdictions and sectors, with extensive experience of cases seated in London and other arbitral centres around the world. Its reputation for excellence and expertise was once again recognised across the key directories reviewing the practice area in 2021.

Recognition for the arbitration team in other publications

Philippa was one of only nine individuals in Legal 500’s renowned ‘Hall of Fame’ for international arbitration. Recognised as “very bright, hardworking and sensible”, she presided over another year of success in “a fantastic international arbitration team that deserves a stellar reputation in the market”.

Daniel was ranked as a ‘Next Generation Partner’ by Legal 500. Sources described him as “exceptional” and “the perfect combination of very intelligent and practical”.

The team’s ranking in Legal 500 noted its strengths in Africa-related matters, disputes within the energy, shipping and telecoms sectors and experience of acting for states. As one commentator put it: “Although smaller than some of the bigger, more well-known teams in the City, I would always recommend Stewarts to my clients, as they are a dedicated, bright team that offers much better value for money to clients than some of the bigger teams elsewhere.”

The International Arbitration team and its partners achieved similar successes in Chambers and Partners’ 2022 rankings. The directory describes the team as a “dynamic practice with a notable offering in commercial arbitration” and one that acts “on behalf of an impressive roster of companies, funds and high net worth individuals, alongside acting for sovereign states”.  Client feedback highlight, amongst other themes, the International Arbitration team’s “customer-centricity and mastery of legal issues”.

Alongside her individual Band 3 ranking as practitioner, Philippa was one of only eleven people to secure a Band 1 UK-wide ranking for her practice as arbitrator. Sources acclaimed Philippa as a “popular choice as counsel and arbitrator for complex commercial and BIT claims” and lauded her as “organised, calm and cool under pressure”.

Chambers & Partners included Daniel as ‘Up and Coming’ within International Arbitration across the UK. He was particularly noted for his expertise in disputes arising from Africa and experience in oil and gas and other sector disputes.  Referees described Daniel as “a brilliant guy” and a “very experienced individual” who “clearly is a technically strong lawyer and strategically astute”.
