Competition Law: Private Enforcement: Claimant

Our Competition Litigation team is ranked in Band 2 within the UK for its claimant private enforcement work. Its work in the recent Supreme Court claim for Asda and Morrison’s against Mastercard is noted. One interviewee says this is “a fantastic team” that is “extremely organised”. The guide goes on to say of the team:

‘Dedicated competition litigation team able to handle high-value proceedings on behalf of domestic and multinational clients from the technology and retail industries. Often assists clients with collective actions and opt-out class actions.’

Head of Competition Litigation Kate Pollock is also ranked in Band 2. The guide says of her:

‘Kate Pollock is particularly active on collective damages claims and opt-out class actions. She represents claimants from the retail, technology and construction sectors in cartel follow-on damages proceedings. Interviewees describe her as “really easy to work with”.’

Our Commercial Litigation team is ranked in Band 3 for the UK for its claimant work. Of the team, Chambers says:

‘Impressive litigation boutique with a strong track record of handling group actions on behalf of institutional investors and shareholders. Also demonstrates notable skill in complex civil proceedings relating to alleged fraud. Members of the team have represented clients such as domestic and multinational businesses, high net worth individuals and financial institutions in cases brought at all levels of the UK court system.’

Clive Zietman and Sean Upson are listed as notable practitioners. The guide says they ‘are both highly experienced in handling disputes in the banking sector, as well as cross-border fraud cases’.

Dispute Resolution: International Arbitration

Our International Arbitration team is ranked in Band 5 within the UK for its expertise and is noted for its offering in commercial arbitration.

The guide says the team ‘demonstrates particular prowess in Africa-related disputes, and offers specialist experience in the energy and telecoms sectors. Acts on behalf of an impressive roster of companies, funds and high net worth individuals, alongside acting for sovereign states in BIT claims. Experienced in arbitrations held under LCIA, SCC and ICC rules.’

Philippa Charles is ranked in Band 3 of the guide. She is described as ‘a popular choice as counsel and arbitrator for complex commercial and BIT claims’. The guide continues, saying: ‘She demonstrates considerable strength in the energy sector and often handles shareholder disputes.’

Philippa also earns some fantastic feedback from interviewees, with one saying: “Philippa provides great insight and overall leadership. She is truly one of the greats in international arbitration.” Another continues: “She is extremely knowledgeable about international arbitration and is very impressive.”
