Stewarts is listed in The Times’ annual report on the best lawyers for business, public and private client law in the UK for the sixth consecutive year. In the commercial disputes resolution and personal injury & clinical negligence categories, Stewarts is acknowledged as one of the top three firms in England and Wales. Our family law practice is also recognised in The Times Best Law Firms 2024 guide.

The listings are based on a survey of solicitors and barristers in England, Wales and Scotland, who were asked to recommend the best law firms in categories covering business, public and private-client fields. Rankings are therefore based entirely on peer feedback. Of the 9,425 law firms currently active in England and Wales, only 250 made the final list.

Commercial dispute resolution

Recognising the work of our Commercial Litigation team and other departments, The Times notes that “Stewarts has attracted work stemming from the impact that the government’s Covid-19 lockdowns had on businesses.”

Our Policyholder Disputes team is highlighted for acting successfully for the owners of the event venue ExCeL London in the ATE test case, leading to a ruling against insurers over pandemic-related losses. The Times reports our team’s statement that the ruling “could affect hundreds of thousands of businesses that could recoup tens of millions of pounds in business interruption losses from insurers.” Businesses across the hospitality, retail, entertainment, sport and leisure sectors with a valid Covid-19 business interruption (BI) claim can now access the Stewarts Claims Service to help recover payment from insurers.

The Times also recognises the success of our Trust and Probate Litigation team, acting for the successful appellant in a long-running trusts litigation. The Privy Council ruled in their judgment that a transfer of $560 million of assets made by the trustees of a Bermuda-based family trust to another was void.

Personal injury & clinical negligence

Acting exclusively for patients with serious injuries, our Personal Injury team helped 51 clients to recover damages of at least £1 million, with an average of more than £4.7 million per client. In addition, our Clinical Negligence team helped clients to win more than £60 million, with an average of £2.2 million per client.

Our Aviation team is also spotlighted, in particular for representing the majority of the families who lost their loved ones in the 2015 Shoreham Airshow disaster at the long-awaited inquest. The coroner, Penelope Schofield, ruled that the 11 men who died were “unlawfully killed” and that a “series of gross errors” led to the deaths. The Times also promotes the launch of Onward in summer 2023, a not-for-profit organisation that supports people in hospital with life-changing injuries or serious illness.

Family law

Included in the listings for the sixth consecutive year, our Divorce and Family team has been recognised for acting on market-leading high-value and complex disputes, many with an international element. The team received the Family Law Team of the Year award at the 2023 Chambers High Net Worth Awards, claiming the prize for the second consecutive year.

As well as the work our of legal teams, The Times also recognises Stewarts’ charity and environmental initiatives, including Planet Mark business certification of having achieved carbon neutral status for the financial year 2021/22.
