As a carbon neutral organisation, we take environmental responsibility seriously, as we focus on taking continuous steps to reduce our impact on the environment.

Carbon neutral law firm

We’re proud to announce that having worked with Planet Mark, who provide third-party verification of our carbon footprint, we are now a carbon neutral business.

In line with internationally recognised PAS2060:2014 standard specifications , achieving a carbon neutral status demonstrates our ongoing commitment to reducing our impact on the planet and society. This is done through continuous carbon reduction and investment in accredited carbon offset programmes to mitigate our carbon footprint.

We have achieved carbon neutral status by offsetting our emissions measured (including electricity, T&D (transmission and distribution) losses, natural gas, waste, water, business travel and paper) through investment in a domestic biogas project. The project was selected by our ESG programme board for its alignment to the UN Global Sustainable Development Goals, and its Gold Standard verification.

We are proud to have achieved year one Planet Mark Business Certification for reporting year May 2021 to April 2022. By becoming a member of Planet Mark, an internationally recognised sustainability certification provider which acknowledges continuous progress, encourages action and builds an empowered community of like-minded individuals, we are committed to measuring and reducing our carbon footprint annually.

In order to achieve Planet Mark Business Certification, we followed a robust three-step process:

  • measuring our impact,
  • engaging everyone in the business,
  • communicating our progress.

We will continue to take responsibility of our carbon emissions to reduce the impact on the planet and society and we aim to empower our community to take climate action. This is the first step on our journey towards achieving net zero emissions. We’re committed to intensifying our approach to sustainability and ensuring we have the right plans in place to reduce our impact on the environment.

We encourage you to get in touch if you would like further details on our journey.

Greener Litigation and Greener Arbitration

Stewarts is a signatory to both the Greener Litigation and Greener Arbitration Pledges, to commit to pursuing our clients’ litigation and arbitration business in an environmentally conscious way.

Both of these pledges require a commitment to review ways of working and take action to help reduce the environmental footprint of the dispute resolution sector.

Examples of meaningful action include:

  • considering green modes of transport for court hearings
  • reducing unnecessary travel by use of video link for witness evidence where appropriate
  • limiting the use of paper files and hearing bundles when possible
