For the seventh consecutive year, Stewarts is listed in The Times’ annual report on the best lawyers for business, public and private client law. For the first time, the firm is listed in four practice areas: Stewarts is ranked for commercial dispute resolution, family and (newly) inheritance and succession, and is once again listed as a top three firm in England and Wales for personal injury and clinical negligence.
The Times Best Law Firms surveyed more than 3,900 solicitors and barristers to identify the best law firms in 28 categories. Rankings are therefore based entirely on peer feedback.
Personal injury and clinical negligence
Recognised in one category, our Personal Injury and Clinical Negligence teams are listed in the top three injury practices in England and Wales for the fifth consecutive year. The Times guide has also acknowledged the work of our International Injury and Aviation teams.
This year partner Clare Salmon secured a settlement for a seriously injured child pedestrian, which includes annual payments to fund their lifetime care needs. The total capitalised value of the settlement is £41,705,604, which is thought to be one of, if not the highest settlements achieved at the current discount rate of -0.25%.
In September this year we welcomed Anita Jewitt as the new Head of our Clinical Negligence department, leading a team of 10 partners and 19 total qualified lawyers.
Commercial dispute resolution
This category recognises the work of our Commercial Litigation and related commercial disputes teams. Stewarts was previously named Dispute Resolution Firm of the Year at the Legal 500 Northern Powerhouse Awards 2024.
Our Policyholder Disputes team is highlighted by The Times for its success on appeal in the At the Premises test case: “The court upheld the 2023 decision that thousands of policyholders were entitled to claim for losses caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. This is predicted to lead to a flurry of Covid business interruption insurance claims from the leisure sector.”
This category also includes our International Arbitration team, which was recently successful in acting for African energy company Aiteo Eastern E & P Company Limited in its challenge under section 68 of the Arbitration Act 1996.
Family
Recognised in all leading directories as leaders in their field, our Divorce and Family team acts for high net worth individuals based in the UK and overseas.
The Times highlights Sam Longworth and Lucy Stewart-Gould’s success at the Court of Appeal in the case of Standish v Standish, convincing judges that the divorce settlement awarded to the wife should be cut from £45 million to £25 million.
Inheritance and succession
For the first time in Times Best Law Firms, our Trust and Probate Litigation team is recognised in the inheritance and succession category. The internationally recognised department was named Contentious Trusts and Estates Team of the Year at the Chambers High Net Worth Awards 2024.
